Portrait of A Sofa
Purchased by my husband (lo! in that faraway time, the year 2000) before he left for university to furnish his first apartment, this sofa has been witness to all the major events in our adult lives: Attending then graduating from postsecondary school, several relocations ("pivot!"), job changes, sickness, wellness, deaths, good times, and rough passages. This sofa has been there, quietly supportive in the literal sense - there at the end of a long work day, a place to rest when ill, recovering from surgery, a restless night, but also in the emotional sense; its familiar contours a reassuring presence during the dark tea times of the soul (to reference a real frood who knew where his towel was).

I have painted our faithful sofa at the close of a summer day – the curtains were partially drawn, and the slice of light hitting the red corduroy pillow and up our warm green walls proved irresistible to paint.
