Desert Shadow

A studio painting from a plein air study of the desert of Baja, this painting captures the subtle yet vibrant interplay of light and shadow of the Baja Landscape in winter.

I wanted to capture the serene and contemplative nature of the desert dawn and the rich and unique palette during this ephemeral time. The foreground’s richly colored desert brush comes alive in the morning with surprisingly rich and vibrant colors. The mountain range that stretches across the horizon has such interesting geometry, especially in the morning light, with beautiful clear blue and violet shadows.
