Swift House 'First House on the Grate Plain'
Painting of a historic early 19th century farmhouse in the town of Kent, CT. It is one of the earliest houses in this section of the town known as the 'Grate Plain' for many years it was used by the town's local groups: the historical society, the garden club, the informal club, etc. Lately it is empty, with the exception of storage boxes, neglected by some town people that think it is a hazard because the interior steps are narrow and steep. Some have suggested it be torn down... but I feel different. I painted it as part of a show I put together called 'Places of Kent' to try and highlight its architectural integrity, and hopefully save it! While its future is unknown, we now have a group studying it for inclusion on both the state and national historic landmark register. Fingers crossed!
